Malarial Parasite Identification test is used to identify the malarial parasite Plasmodium in the peripheral smear. Few
Plasmodium species that can cause malaria in human beings are- P.falciparum, P.vivax, P.malariae, P.ovale, and
P.knowlesi. The infection is transmitted to humans by the bite of female Anopheles mosquito. It can also be transmitted
via blood transfusions and from a pregnant mother to the unborn baby. Once plasmodium enters bloodstream it infects and
destroys mainly red blood cells and liver cells. This is quite an easy and reliable test wherein the technician looks at
the blood smear under a microscope to even identify the type of Plasmodium species present.
