Procalcitonin Test
PCT or Procalcitonin test measures the level of procalcitonin in the blood. Procalcitonin is a substance that is
produced by the body in response to tissue injury and bacterial infections. This test helps to detect severe bacterial
infections which have a risk to progress towards sepsis and eventually organ failure and septic shock. This is a life
threatening condition and needs aggressive antibiotic therapy. It may also be used to distinguish between a bacterial
and viral infection. Other conditions where procalcitonin may be mildly elevated are trauma, surgery, pancreatitis,
burns, cardiogenic shock (related to a heart attack), acute organ transplant rejection, and kidney involvement in
urinary tract infections in children.
