Peripheral Blood Smear (PBS) is a blood test that is used to examine the size, shape, and number, of the three types of
blood cells- Red Blood Cells (RBCs), White Blood Cells (WBCs) and platelets. The blood smear is stained with appropriate
dye and viewed under a microscope by a qualified professional to detect any abnormal cells. It is helpful for the
diagnosis of sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, bone marrow disorders, cancers like leukemia, etc. It may also help
identify parasites of malaria and filariasis. Your doctor may order a, CBC (Complete Blood Count) Test along with the
PBS or it may be ordered after abnormal CBC results.
