PAP Smear Test
PAP Smear is a cytology based screening test for cervical cancer in women. (Cytology is the study of cells). Cervix
forms the opening of the uterus and is very narrow. It is also called as the birth canal and forms the junction between
the uterus and the vagina. The cells for investigation are gently scraped off from the walls of the cervix using a swab
or a brush. These are then studied under a microscope. They may appear normal, abnormal or inconclusive. An abnormal, or
positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or
testing may be necessary. Treatment of abnormal cervical cells prevents the development of cervical cancer.
