Barium Swallow Test
Barium Swallow test is an imaging test or a specialised type of xray used to visualize upper digestive tract. The upper digestive or GI Tract includes the back of the mouth, pharynx (throat), food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and upper part of small intestine. Barium is often mixed with water to make a thick drink which is consumed by the patient or a barium pill may be given. When its swallowed, it coats the inside of the upper GI tract.
Barium absorbs X-rays and looks white on X-ray film. This helps highlight these organs, as well as their inside linings and the motion of swallowing, on the X-ray image. These images thus help diagnose any conditions that causes difficulty in swallowing or if there is a suspected disorder of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract.
