Stool Reducing Substance Test
Stool Reducing Substance is a test used to detect the unabsorbed sugar in the stool. Fructose, glucose, lactose, pentose
and galactose are some reducing sugars that can be identified in a stool sample with this test. Presence of reducing
substances in stool indicates that carbohydrates are not being absorbed properly. This test is most commonly used to
detect lactose intolerance. Lactase deficiency is usually the cause of lactose intolerance, though lactose intolerance
may also occur due to other causes. Individuals with lactase deficiency may develop bloating, pain, flatulence and
diarrhoea after consuming lactose-containing food.
