Progesterone Test
A progesterone test is a blood test that measures the amount of progesterone in the blood. Progesterone is a female
hormone mainly secreted by the ovaries (female reproductive organs containing eggs). Its levels rise post ovulation
(release of egg by an ovary) and plays an important role in the monthly menstrual cycle. During pregnancy, its levels
rise to about 10 times the normal values which helps prevent uterine contractions and preterm labour.
This test can help find the cause of infertility, risk of miscarriages, diagnose ectopic pregnancy and monitor response
to fertility treatments. It can also help detect ovarian cancer. Since progesterone is also produced by adrenal glands
in both male and females, it can be used to detect adrenal gland disorders as well.
